This books scope is MASSIVE. Considering it's 300pages long (close to 400 with sources etc) it covers an insane amount of information. Not only does this act as a biography of Ewan Forbes but it also goes into great detail about the changing rights of trans people throughout their lives & after.

Next to no personal records of Ewan's live survive, not only from the trial but throughout his life he wished for a private life, with this Zoë assumes and guesses how Ewan must have felt. Ewan grew up with what seems like an insanely accepting more who did everything she could to help her son.

There was also a little mention of Harold Gillies in here talking about his pioneering sex reassignment surgery, I'm super fascinated with Harold after reading The Facemaker by Lindsey Fitzharris.

This is a must read for anyone not only wanting to learn about Ewan Forbes, his life and his court case that changed the law in the UK for Trans people but anyone wanting to learn more about Trans history. It includes issues about trans rights specially within the law and court setting covering not only Ewan's case but also April Ashley's case.

The last section covers Ewan's legacy. How trans rights changed during the final years of Ewan's life and after, still showing how much works still needs to be done to help trans rights in the UK (& the world).

This book is incredibly well researched and thoughtful, I found some passages incredibly moving.
